High-Temperature Gaskets: Requirements for Rubber Materials and Applications

High temperature gaskets are designed for applications where materials must maintain reliable sealing performance under extreme heat conditions, often exceeding 150°C.

These gaskets are used in industries such as automotive, and industrial equipments. The gaskets will be exposed to high temperatures, pressure, and chemicals.

1. Requirements for Rubber Materials in High-Temperature Gaskets:

Heat Resistance: Rubber materials must retain elasticity, structural integrity, and sealing capabilities at elevated temperatures. Materials such as FKM (Fluoroelastomer) and HNBR are commonly chosen for their ability to withstand prolonged exposure to high temperatures without degrading.

Chemical and Oil Resistance: In high-temperature environments, gaskets often encounter fuels, oils, and aggressive chemicals. Rubber materials like FKM, which resist both high temperatures and chemicals, are essential in applications such as fuel systems and exhaust systems.

Rubber material could be used in High-Temperature Gaskets:

FKM (Fluoroelastomer): FKM is commonly selected for EGR gaskets due to its high-temperature stability, excellent resistance to chemicals, and ability to withstand fuel exposure. FKM performs well in continuous temperatures up to 200°C, with certain grades capable of handling intermittent peaks up to 230°C. Its resistance to oils, fuels, and exhaust gases makes it ideal for EGR applications.

HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber): HNBR offers good resistance to heat, oil, and fuel. It can withstand temperatures up to approximately 150°C and provides good mechanical properties, including good tensile strength and wear resistance.

2. Applications of High-Temperature Gaskets:

Automotive Exhaust Systems: High-temperature gaskets seal exhaust manifolds, EGR valves, and catalytic converters, where exhaust gases generate extreme heat. FKM and high-performance HNBR rubbers are frequently used due to their heat and chemical resistance.

Industrial Equipment: High-temperature gaskets are used in pumps, compressors, and machinery exposed to steam, chemicals, and thermal cycling. Materials like FKM and silicone rubber (for general high-temperature resilience) are ideal for various industrial applications.

Selecting the appropriate rubber material, such as FKM, HNBR, or VMQ, is important to achieve reliable, long-term sealing performance for high temperature gaskets.
