Large O-rings typically refer to O-rings with a diameter exceeding 500 mm. The large size O-rings are widely used in industries such as air separation, semiconductors, wastewater treatment, large power plants and petrochemicals. These large size O-rings are normally assembled in natural gas pipelines, ball valves, pressure vessels and reactors.
For standard-sized O-rings, manufacturing typically involves compression molding or injection molding. We produce large O-rings by using of segmental vulcanization.
Segmental Vulcanization Process:
- Principle: The O-ring is divided into sections, and each section is vulcanized in sequence. Through the application of heat and pressure, a chemical cross-linking reaction occurs in the rubber material, ensuring the desired hardness and elasticity for sealing.
- Temperature and Pressure Control: The vulcanization temperature for each section is generally controlled between 150°C and 180°C, with precise control needed to ensure the seam’s strength and sealing performance. The vulcanization time is determined based on the thickness and hardness of the rubber material.
- Inspection: After segmental vulcanization, the O-ring’s seams and overall structure undergo thorough inspection to ensure the absence of defects like bubbles or cracks.
Benefits of Segmental Vulcanization:
- Adaptability to Large Sizes: This process overcomes equipment and mold size limitations. It allow for the production of O-rings with diameters exceeding 500 mm.
- High Seam Strength: Precision in the vulcanization process ensures that the seam strength is high, minimizing potential leakage risks from joint areas.
Application of Large O-Rings:
- Petrochemical and Natural Gas Industries: Large O-rings are often used in pipeline and valve sealing. They particularly work under high-pressure conditions where chemical resistance and durability are critical.
- Wastewater Treatment and Air Separation: These environments require reliable sealing performance across varying pressures and fluid mediums.
- Semiconductors and Chemical Reactors: In these sectors, O-rings must withstand high temperatures, corrosive chemicals, and extended service life demands.
