Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) VS Compression set: 2 different ways to assess the performance of rubber material

1. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA):

  • Purpose: DMA can measure the mechanical properties of materials under dynamic conditions: such as oscillating stress or strain, change of temperature, vibration, or other environmental factors.
  • Key Metrics: It provides information on the material’s storage modulus (elastic behavior), loss modulus (viscous behavior), and damping factor (tan δ). These metrics help determine the material’s stiffness, energy dissipation, and viscoelastic properties.
  • Applications: DMA is used to understand material performance under dynamic loads, such as in automotive components, seals, o-rings. It helps predict how materials will perform in real-world conditions like vibrations or temperature changes.

2. Compression Set:

  • Purpose: This test assesses the material’s ability to return to its original shape after being compressed and then released.
  • Key Focus: Unlike DMA, which measures dynamic properties, reversible compression set focuses on elastic recovery after sustained compression. It measures how much permanent deformation remains after the material is compressed and allowed to recover.
  • Applications: It is used to evaluate elastomers in static sealing applications where the material is under continuous compression, such as in gaskets or O-rings, and is expected to maintain its shape and performance after repeated compression.

Key Differences:

  • DMA looks at the material’s behavior under dynamic loads, providing insights into viscoelastic properties across a range of conditions.
  • Compression Set measures the material’s capacity to return to its original form after being compressed and is more relevant for applications involving static compression.
Compare with DMA, compression set is normally tested for daily production. DMA could be used in case of dynamic loading, higher durability and reliability performance requirement.
